This guide is built around that gap — what each planner does well, and where you must double-check it.

How AI trip planners work

The pattern is the same everywhere: an LLM turns your prompt into a structured day-by-day plan, and a data layer injects live inventory — hotels, flights, reviews, maps — into it. Booking.com's AI Trip Planner has run on ChatGPT technology since its June 2023 launch[4], and in October 2025 OpenAI opened its Apps SDK "Access Connectors" with Booking.com and Expedia among the first partners, putting booking surfaces inside ChatGPT itself[5]. One name you may remember — Tripnotes — pivoted away from trip planning entirely and now redirects to the restaurant service Dorsia[10]. Don't rely on it for itineraries.

The big platforms, honestly

Booking.com runs its AI Trip Planner as the centerpiece of a wider AI push — Skift reported five live AI experiments in September 2026[8]. It is the most complete plan-to-book loop today. Expedia is the cautionary tale done right: its Romie assistant is still in alpha on EG Labs, and after learning where chatbots break, Expedia shifted toward specialized AI agents rather than one all-in-one assistant — CEO Ariane Gorin discussed the lessons publicly in May 2026[9]. The lesson for travelers: even the industry is treating AI as a planner with humans on the edges, not an autopilot.
